Schoolboard shakeup, new pizza, and Gator win

It’s the Monday after a long weekend for most of us. How’s everyone feeling? I hope great!

Is this cooler weather getting you in the Halloween spirit? Check out these Halloween events happening around town!

Let’s get you your news and weather.

🌡️ Monday: High is 80°F and Low is 64° ⛈️ with 80% chance of rain, Tuesday: High is 84°, low of 64° with 25% chance of rain ☂️

📰 The General Scoop:

  • 🚰 Lead check! GRU just wrapped up an online inventory of all water service lines in Gainesville, mapping out the materials used to pipe drinking water into every home and building. This effort follows a new federal rule from the EPA aimed at cutting down lead pipes to protect public health. Sadly, Florida leads the nation in the number of lead pipes. No need to worry, they don’t expect to find lead, but if the pipe material comes up as “unknown” they will reach out soon.

  • 🏫 School Board Shake Up The Alachua County School Board made a surprise move on Tuesday, voting to fire Superintendent Shane Andrew after reviewing his evaluations. Andrew got mixed reviews: two "effective," two "needs improvement," and one "unsatisfactory." This led Board Member Kay Abbitt to motion for his dismissal, effective Nov. 15, and after a quick 10-minute break, the board voted 3-2 to let him go. Andrew only recently became permanent superintendent nine months ago—after being appointed interim last year following the firing of Carlee Simon. He’s now the sixth superintendent in the past decade. The Board will chose an interim Superintendent this evening.

📰 Business News

  • 🍕 New Pie Place Coming I’d heard rumblings of a new vegan pizza place coming to Gainesville, but confirmed with the owners of Wild Pie, that they in fact, are opening soon in Gainesville. The location will be Hub on campus at 3rd Avenue. The original Wild Pie was a food truck, and this Gainesville opening will be the Jax based pizza spot’s second brick and mortar location.

🏅 Sports News:

  • 🏈 Freshman Frenzy at Homecoming 🐊 DJ Lagway and Jadan Baugh stole the show during UF's 48-20 win over Kentucky, capping off Homecoming week. Lagway passed for 259 yards, while Baugh ran for over 100 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns. Both freshmen, who were backups just a week ago, delivered a historic performance, becoming the first true freshman duo to start at QB and RB in Gators history. Coach Napier praised their efforts, calling it “winning football.”

  • 🏐 Gator Volleyball picks up 2 W’s on the road The Gators swept both Texas A&M and LSU on the road this weekend 3-0 and 3-0. Amazing SEC wins, ladies!

  •  ⚽️ Soccer Falls to the ‘Dores The Gator soccer team sported hints of pink to celebrate breast cancer awareness but sadly fell 0-2 to the visiting Vandy Commodores.
