🌀 Help with Helene, West End Plans, and Weekend Oktoberfests

Hi, Gainesville:

Hoping everyone is safe and sound. Certainly sending positive vibes to our coastal friends as they recover from the wind and rain that Helene is bringing to the Sunshine State.

As we identify opportunities for folks to help as recovery starts, I’ll include them ❤️

🌡️ Friday: High is 88°F and Low is 70 ° with 40% chance of rain ☔️ , Saturday: High is 88°, low of 69° with 49% chance of rain ⛈️

📰 The General Scoop:

  • West End Golf Course Plans Moving Forward If you’ve driven by the old West End lately, you notice they’ve begun clearing the land. Good news! They’ve greenlit plans for the redevelopment of the West End Golf Course! The site will become a community park, with $900,000 in funding set aside. Planned features include a driving range, walking trails, pickleball courts, and even a splash pad. Designs will be shared with the community in early 2025.

🏘️ Motel-to-Housing Redevelopment Approved 🏘️ The BOCC also approved a zoning change that allows motels in certain areas to be redeveloped into multifamily housing, with 40% of the units reserved for affordable housing. This is a win for those looking to increase affordable housing options in Gainesville!🌆

  • 🌍 Gainesville Teen Set to Speak at the United Nations 🌍 Abhith Kasala, a junior at Gainesville High School, has been researching microplastics since he was 10 years old and before talks about them were so common, and now he's about to take the global stage! 🎤 Kasala is set to present his findings at the United Nations Science Summit, discussing the harmful effects of microplastics on our environment and health. His work has already earned him accolades from NASA, the Sierra Club, and first place at the State Science Fair.
