Gators, Gulf, and Gameday Buzz
Morning Gville!
I don’t know about y’all, but there’s something electric in the air when a big game is on the horizon. Whatever you’re expecting for Saturday, one thing’s for sure: spending the day in The Swamp—or just hanging in Swamptown—is bound to be a good time.
Now, let’s dive into your local news and events to get you all geared up for the weekend!
Enjoy, Gainesville!
📰 The General Scoop:
Downtown parking rates go into effect Monday (Sep 16): Downtown Gainesville looks to promote higher turnover in the prime parking spots (what I like to refer to as princess 👸 parking). Weekend and after 5 pm parking remain free. More details here
Wally World in Butler survives a scare: Walmart in Butler Plaza was evacuated on Wednesday after a bomb threat was received. Thankfully no bomb was found, and all are safe.
Gators for the Gulf: UF hosted a panel this week to tackle some big topics—like the future of the Gulf of Mexico. Climate change, overfishing, and pollution are just some of the challenges on deck.
🏢 Business News:
Women in Tech and Entrepreneurship chapter coming to Gainesville: This one is near and dear to my heart! Excited to see folks like P27 ventures supporting women in tech and our community! Women represent 27% of the technology workforce but women founders only get 2% of the venture capital deployed. The launch party is scheduled for 9/25 at First Magnitude. See you there!
GRU vs. Gainesville: The ongoing saga continues as GRU pushes back against an ordinance that would require them to acquire a permit to do any time of work in “right of ways”. They say this will make their costs higher and their turnaround time slower — none of that can be good! Watching this one in the hopes we can all keep the lights on. 💡
🏅 Sports News:
All eyes on the Gators 🏈 Excitement builds as the Texas A&M Aggies make their way to Gainesville to take on the Gators. Texas A&M is 1-1 and is sporting a brand new coach, Mike Elko. The Aggies are favored by 3.5 points
